Charges against the left-footed forward were read out to the court before hearing a bail application from Greenwood’s barrister. Greenwood is yet to be involved in any professional football or any activity involving football since he was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault and questioned about claims of making threats to kill in January. He was released on bail and twice had that extended in April and June.

Janet Potter, the deputy chief prosecutor for Crown Prosecution service involved in the case, confirmed on Saturday: that the CPS had authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

“The defendant’s first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court. Potter said as quoted by Sky Sports and The Mirror.

The footballer was initially denied bail after a Manchester Magistrates’ Court appearance on Monday, but a fresh application held in private at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court will now see Greenwood released, with conditions to not contact the complainant or any witnesses and to live at an address on Bow Green Road in Bowdon until the case is over.

Greenwood was first detained in January this year and suspended by Manchester United after a woman posted allegations online that included images and videos of the aforementioned charges. He was immediately suspended by his employer and has not featured for the club in any capacity since his arrest, the club has however retained his shirt number in what many see as a hope of his innocence in the case.

The 21-year-old Manchester United academy grandaunt will next appear in court on Monday 21 November.
